Spring into a New Design

by | Apr 11, 2020

Although we may be having rough times, I have to say it’s nice to see spring coming our way. Hearing the birds in the trees, enjoying the sunshine and seeing things come back to life after a long winter is exactly what we all need right now. Watching nature undergo change can inspire us to make some changes in your décor and design!  Draw inspiration from the nature we’re seeing us all around us and add some of those lively spring elements to see your space come alive.

Using Greenery in Spring Design

This is an easy one! Being inspired by nature easily leads to adding it into your spring design. Besides looking great, plants can improve air quality and reduce dust.

Short on space? We are seeing a trend towards “living walls”!

From an aesthetic point of view, plants can provide balance in a room.  By way of example, most hotel furniture is low.  A tall plant can provide height and create a focal point.

What about the black thumb who has no desire to have any plant life?  There are hundreds of realistic artificial plants

Another option is to look at your wallpaper.  We are seeing a trend towards beautiful bold floral prints that give you that garden feel, but no weeding required!

Thinking About Sustainability

While we are appreciating nature, it’s equally important to act in a way that will protect it.   We have talked about the importance of sustainability in the past, and we see it as trend that is here to stay.

For our hotel and commercial clients, decorating with sustainable materials is a great option for many reasons.  Besides being the right choice for the environment, it makes a lasting impression on your guests and makes the most long-term financial sense.

There are many ways to decorate in a sustainable way.  There is using sustainable materials and hardware (i.e. LED lighting, etc.).  Sustainable materials, like raw wood, creates a warm and comfortable essence, exactly what you want for your guests to have a comfortable, relaxing stay.

There is also in HOW we decorate.  Frequent re-designs are wasteful.  A timeless design will not need to be updated as often and will last longer.   Limiting trending colours to smaller, soft items means that you can keep up with trends without an entire refresh.

Colourful Design

One of my favourite parts of spring is seeing the flowers bloom, amazing pops of colour appearing in my garden. We talked earlier about how to use pops of colour and that is how they can be used in a spring-inspired design. Colourful accents give a focal point and breathe life into a room.

Another way we design differently in the spring is how we use metal accents.  In the winter, bright metals are preferred.  Shiny surfaces will reflect light – something desperately needed in those cold, dark winter months.  However, muted metallics are a way to keep metal in your décor, but in a more subtle way.

We are not ignorant to what is going on in the world – these are truly difficult times. However, spring reminds us that winter does not last forever.  Dark, cold times do not last forever.  Adding elements of spring can help us keep that optimism and hope in mind.

If you are using this slow time to think about your future projects, we would love to chat about how we can make it a reality as soon as we can.
