In thinking about where to find inspiration for interior design, your mind may start and end at magazines or interior design websites. Of course, that is a great place to look and there are many interior design websites that have great tips and ideas.
However, don’t shut yourself to other sources of inspiration. Here are just a few places that you can look for inspiration.
As talented as designers can be, none of us hold a candle to the designs that are found in nature. From the colours painted across the sky when you see a beautiful sunset to the intricate detail in some animal prints, there is so much inspiration in nature.
Think about how you feel during different seasons. Are you someone who likes to cozy up in fall, with the crunch of the leaves under your feet and a pumpkin spice latte in hand? Or do you come alive in spring when everything becomes green once more? Choose the kind of nature that speaks to you so that your space can be the space where you feel like your best self.
For our commercial clients, does your brand connect to nature? Or are you embracing environmental initiatives? Your design can subtly nod to your eco-friendly nature, an increasingly important aspect of any business.
For our hotel clients, connect your hotel to the location around it. If your hotel is situated in a beautiful location, draw inspiration from the spectacular sites so that your guests’ stay is truly one to remember.
2. Art & Fashion
Art and interior design have many things in common – they all involve combining colour, texture, light, and space to evoke a certain feeling.
Turn to art to see how different colours play together, or how light can create a strong visual impact. Look closely at a sculpture to see how lines and curves can convey an emotion or an idea.
The same principles apply to fashion. Think about how different styles show off different aspects of your personality. Are you a more classic and conservative dresser or do you lean towards something more avant-garde?
For our commercial and hotel clients, think about what feelings you want to create in your space. Is it important to have a professional, classic design? Are you trying to showcase your creative side with something more modern and artistic? Looking at how art and fashion uses different techniques to tell a story can inspire your design.
3. Movies & TV
I cannot be the only one who watches a movie and is distracted by plot points because I really love the kitchen.
Some filmmakers are known for creating incredible interiors – Nancy Meyers and Wes Anderson immediately come to mind.
Movies and TV shows are a great place to look for interior design inspiration. Seeing unexpectant design elements working on a screen can bolster your confidence to try something similarly bold in real life.
So, grab some popcorn and put on your favourite movie – it’s for “research”!
