3 Questions to Ask Your Hotel Interior Designer

by | Jul 3, 2020

Finding the right hotel interior designer can feel daunting.  There are many options and, given your investment in your hotel, you want to make sure that it looks right.

How do you find the team that will bring your vision to life? When you meet someone, how do you know that they are going to be a good fit for your project?

Let’s go through three questions that you can ask a potential hotel interior designer to get you started.

How do you approach hotel design?

Knowing a designer’s approach can tell you a lot about your hotel designer and is motivated by various factors.  By learning about how a designer’s approach to design, you can also learn about their experience and education.

By way of example, attending the New York School of Design developed my technical skills.  Then, while working within the hotel industry, I began to see how the different pieces all came together and how design touched each aspect of the guest and employee experience.

Armed with that knowledge, I developed our “Guest First Design Strategy”, our way of approaching interior design to create the best guest experience for your hotel.

2. Tell me about some of your other hotel projects

There was a time when hotel interior design was treated no different than any other commercial design.  However, as any hotelier will tell you, it is a unique industry with unique needs.  You need to find a hotel designer who understands the cross-section between meeting the technical requirements of a commercial space, but can also create a warm, inviting space that guests want to visit time again.

3. How would others describe working with you?

Every project is a success because of the teamwork of the players involved.  Even the most brilliant designer can sour a project by simply being difficult to work with.  Getting a glimpse of an interior designer’s personality and professionalism before the project begins may save you many headaches down the line.

Your interior designer will be working with your whole team – the staff, contractor and other professionals.  Finding an interior designer who is professional and whose personality is the right fit for your team will go a long way in making your renovation a success.

Of course, as part of your process, you will want to look at testimonials and references from past clients. If your peers have been satisfied with past work, you can reasonably conclude that it will go well for you also.
